One poor chap hit the headlines recently after he filled a rental car with the wrong type of fuel, setting him back a whopping £9,000. Initially, he thought that putting the 30 litres of petrol into a diesel Mazda would only set him back the £1,000 excess on the policy. However, he unfortunately found out too late that there was a small print clause saying he was entirely liable for the damage.
As a result, Toby Gawin was charged £9,272 – £3,367 for a set of four diesel injectors, £376 for a new fuel tank, £271 to cover 14 days of ‘loss of use’, £264 for an independent engineers report, and a £65 admin fee. Blimey!
Around 150,000 motorists put diesel in a petrol car or vice versa each year in the UK. But the good news is that extortionate costs can usually be avoided by paying for it yourself. The injectors may need replacing, but on the whole, systems can be cleaned through by experts such as Wrong Fuel.
If you find yourself in the same predicament as Toby, with your car coming to a spluttering halt a couple of miles after filling up, then this is what you should do.
As with any breakdown, you need to remain calm and find a safe place to park out of the way from oncoming traffic. Keep the ignition turned off to avoid more of the wrong fuel being drawn into the engine, and ultimately causing more damage.
Work Out How Much You Put In
If you filled up with less than 10%, then it should be fine to fill up on the right fuel and be on your way. If you’re not sure, then follow the next step rather than risk it!
Call the Experts
For those of you that filled more than 10% of your tank with the incorrect fuel, you’ll have to ring for a qualified mechanic. Changing car parts after filling with the wrong fuel is usually unnecessary. Therefore, you should call a company who specialises in draining fuel at an affordable price.
